4. Pandas have Tiny Cubs Because of their Poor Diet

Baby Giant panda is born blind, helpless and tiny weighing just 5 ounces or about 1 thousand of a size with their mom. At birth, they are pink and nearly hairless but soon they develop the black and white pattern that will mark them the rest of their lives.  Of all placental mammals, Panda cubs are the tiniest in comparison to their mother. Why so small? The mother’s diet plays a role, due to low metabolism a Panda mother has a relatively low blood oxygen level, so the cub gets more oxygen outside the womb.
